Dominique Crenn is a French-born, San Francisco–based chef best known for Atelier Crenn, her three-Michelin-starred restaurant built around what she calls “poetic culinaria” — food as memory, art, storytelling, and emotion. She opened Atelier Crenn in 2011 as an homage to her father, and in 2018 became the first female chef in North America to receive three Michelin stars.
Her style is very artistic and cerebral, but not cold. Think: refined French technique, sculptural plating, personal nostalgia, coastal/Brittany influence, sustainability, and a strong sense of femininity and rebellion. Atelier Crenn is less “classic luxury steakhouse” and more poetic fine dining atelier — intimate, emotional, modern, and very chef-driven. Her official bio also notes that Atelier Crenn became the first restaurant in the U.S. to be certified plastic-free and later received a Michelin Green Star for sustainability.
She’s also a major industry figure beyond the restaurant: named The World’s Best Female Chef, a World’s 50 Best Global Icon, and one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People. She has appeared in food media, worked as a consultant on The Menu, and is known for advocating for sustainability, equality, and a more humane restaurant culture.
