Chef Evan Funke’s long standing relationships with a close knit network of California’s finest family farms, allows a culinary approach that embodies the true cooking traditions of Italy.
Pio Cesare has been producing wines for 135 years and through five generations in its ancient cellars in the center of the town of Alba.
The Pio Cesare winery was founded in 1881, by Cesare Pio. He was a very successful entrepreneur and was inspired to produce a small and select quantity of wines from the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco for himself, his family, friends, and customers. Cesare Pio was dedicated to the terroir of the Piedmont region and to producing wines of the highest quality.
Cesare Benvenuto, has been active since 2000 as the fifth generation and recently Pio Boffa’s daughter, Federica Rosy, joined Pio Cesare, representing the future of the Family.
Today, the family members travel extensively to more than 50 countries around the world, echoing what Cesare Pio himself did at the beginning of our history—promoting the name and reputation of the Pio Cesare winery to restaurants, hotels, wine shops and wine lovers worldwide.
Chef Evan Funke is a steward of Italian cooking traditions and culture. With Rome as the singular focus for Mother Wolf, Funke’s rich and soulful cooking is a mosaic of the ancient, pastoral and urban culinary heritage of la cucina Romana. The menu at Mother Wolf echoes themes of shepherds, popes, farmers and artisans through wafer-thin wood fired pizzas, hyper-seasonal antipasti and the traditional handmade pastas for which Funke is renowned.
Cesare Benvenuto Pio is the fifth generation of the Pio Cesare family and he is carrying on the legacy of the family-run business, guiding and directing the winery with his cousin Federica after the passing of the 4th generation, Pio Boffa.
Since he was a child, Cesare has always shown a great interest and passion in the wine world, joining his grandfather Giuseppe Boffa and his uncle Pio Boffa in September 2000. Today he manages the international sales for his family’s winery, traveling across the world to promote the highly regarded Pio Cesare wines as well as coordinating the different activities in the vineyards, in the cellar and in the administration office.
