By D.R. Stewart, intrepid reporter and discerning wine taster

Theories on tasting often say you’re palate has to warm up, first wines don’t thrill.  Theories on tasting often say your tongue gives out rather quickly to the tannin and that first wines impress more.  Theories on tasting are there to corn-fuse you.

Convening at The Peninsula in Beverly Hills, right out of the gate the LearnAboutWine (LAW) Napa event struck me with the O’Connell Family Wines Gabrielle Collection.  Yes,the Irish are now about more than just the straight up booze.  They had a frenchy rosé and their 201o Juxtaposition Cabernet Sauvignon benefited from the cooler conditions in that particular growing season, shading it a bit Bordeaux.

LAW’s “Meet the Nappa Valley Vintners” had a stellar line-up, so I got on the phone to my old boss (when I worked the Universal Studio Tours), current “Sales and Hospitality” at Pride Mountain Vineyards, Andy Nies.  Andy pushed me towards Oberon (2012 Cab had a nouveau sweetness without the boring bottom), Mira Winery (2010 Cab and a 2009 Syrah that were both smart tasting entries) and Quintessa’s genius 2010 meritage.

Vin Roc Wine Caves had a huge gathering around their table checking their un-Oaky 2012 Chardonnay.  Pick of the day may have been the Saintsbury 2011 Brown Ranch Pinot Noir or the Roy Estate 2009 Propietary Red.

And a straight-up plug — LAW is doing a Santa Barbara wine weekend — check it out, totally reasonable.

A Night With Napa Valley

Join The Napa Valley Vintners and LearnAboutWine for an evening showcasing some of the best producers in the region. Among the featured wineries at A Night With Napa Valley will be Ackerman Family Vineyards, Edict Wines, Freemark Abbey, Gabrielle, Lail Vineyards, Mira Winery, Oberon Wines, Quintessa, Revana Family Vineyard, Rocca Family Vineyards, Roy Estate, Rubissow Wines, Saintsbury, Signorello Estate, Somerston Estate, Tetra, VinRoc Wine Caves and William Cole Vineyards.

The walk-around tasting portion of the event will be followed by a sit-down, four-course dinner at which reserve and library wines will be paired with each dish. Throughout the meal, represented winery owners and winemakers will table hop to answer questions and share the stories behind the bottles and different vintages. It’s a great way to get to know the people behind your favorite labels.

The event will take place March 26 at the luxurious The Peninsula Beverly Hills. The tasting will be held from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m, and includes tray-passed hors d’oeuvres. The multi-course dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the tasting portion only are $75 in advance or $95 at the door.

Admission to both the tasting portion and the more formal dinner are $250 each. Note that the dress code for the dinner is more formal. That event will also include gift bags and a live auction to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation. Attendance is limited to only 60 guests in order to keep the atmosphere more intimate.

SBC has received permission to offer our readers a promotional code for a discount on tickets. Use “NAPASBC” for 40% off the tasting portion, or “NAPASBCVIP” for 20% off the dinner event, which includes the wine tasting. Please note: these codes are good for advance purchase only and cannot be used at the door.
